SCOTTVILLE — Last week, Mason County Central Upper Elementary Principal Kevin Kimes presented end of the year awards. Awards included best behavior, perfect attendance, parent volunteer of the year, and the Courage of Gabe award.
The Courage of Gabe award is given to a student annually for over coming obstacles. It is named after recent MCC graduate Gabe Sessions. This year’s recipient was fifth grader Josanna Warren.
“Josanna had the courage to adapt and work through challenges and is now ready to move forward in the sixth grade,” Kimes said. “She has demonstrated great courage, determination, and proven there is no limit to what we can accomplish.”
Aaron Dekuiper was named parent volunteer of the year. Dekuiper is the president of the Parent Teacher Committee. “He has worked tirelessly to create and lead meaningful and engaging monthly meetings and worked to creatively find ways to support our students,” Kimes said. “He, along with others, was responsible for leading the Spartan Gear drive just a short time ago. He navigated the technology challenge during his leadership which fostered a belief of, ‘OK , we can do this.'”
Behavior awards were presented to: Alex Lynch, third grade; Prestyn Dood, fourth grade, and Jordyn Aultman, fifth grade.
“Appropriate student behavior is fundamental to a safe learning environment,” Kimes said. “It is a large part of what we do here. There are many students who attend school every day and never have even one discipline referral. This is a noteworthy accomplishment at MCC and a point of pride for our school.”
Kimes said the students were randomly selected, but had to meet eligibility of not having disciplinary issues. They each received a $100 gift certificate from Walmart.
Perfect attendance was awarded to: Gavin Griswold, Sage Griswold, Ian Sodders, and Griffin Dekuiper. Each also received a $100 Walmart gift certificate.
