Obituary: Dr. Donald Lemott Wise, 96, Ludington.
Dr. Donald Lemott Wise of Ludington, and formerly of Zion, Ill., and Racine, Wis., went to be with his Lord on Easter Sunday, April 21, 2019. He was 96-years-old, born in Zion, Ill. April 15, 1923. He graduated from Zion Benton High School in 1941, Moody Bible Institute of Chicago in 1944, and Wheaton College in 1947. He took further training at Northern Baptist Theological Seminary and the University of Chicago Graduate School, and received a doctorate from The Master’s Seminary in Newburgh, Ind.
On December 22, 1944, he married Margaret Joyce Andersen of Racine, Wis., and they celebrated their 74th anniversary this past December.
Dr. Wise served as pastor of the Union Grove, Wis. Baptist Church from 1948-1956, then began a career of teaching at Moody Bible Institute in Chicago, where he was professor of Bible and New Testament Greek. As a professor, he helped train pastors and missionaries for 32 years, retiring in 1988. He authored the college-level correspondence course “New Testament Greek Grammar” — a course that has been taken by more than 6,000 people — and a revised edition of “The Practical Use of the Greek New Testament”; co-authored with his wife, Margaret, “Planning Men’s Banquets”, and was a contributing editor to the “Wycliffe Bible Encyclopedia”. During his career as a pastor and teacher he spoke at 120 different churches, camps and conferences, and served as an interim pastor at 21 churches. His preaching and teaching were characterized by taking the complexities of biblical Greek and making them understandable in today’s society.
