Jean ‘Skip’ McCumber, 79, Branch.
Jean “Skip” McCumber, 79, of Branch passed away on Saturday, April 6, 2019 at her home. Skip was born on May 30, 1939 in Ludington, the daughter of Eugene and Virginia (Anderson) Christman and graduated from Ludington High School as the Valedictorian of the class of 1957. She was one of the first females to earn a varsity letter in athletics at Ludington High School. Skip attended the College of William & Mary before returning home to care for her father after her mother died. She later returned to college attending Michigan State University along with her sister Virginia. On September 24, 1978 Skip married Duane “Doc” McCumber at the home of the Rev. Fred Stewart in Branch, and they have celebrated 40 years together.
Skip worked many years as the personnel director for Lake Michigan Carferry in Ludington, and as an officer on the boat. She was proud to be a member of the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary, and a member of the merchant marine. She served her community for many years as a first responder/EMT for Branch Fire Department and was a longtime member of Bachelor Evangelical Covenant Church in Fountain, where she held many offices. Bachelor Church was like a second home for Skip.
Skip was a very social person. She loved to host events and entertain at her home for family and friends, especially around the holidays. She and Doc spent much of their summer months camping, and anytime was a good time for fishing. She often boasted how she usually caught the first fish and the most fish. Skip’s faith, love for her family, and love for children were always evident, whether volunteering at church, leading a children’s program, hosting or organizing an event, or just spoiling her grandchildren.
Skip was preceded in death by her parents, her daughter Dawn and son Geoffrey Schrink, her stepson Duane “Dude” McCumber, and her granddaughter Megan Schrink.
Skip will be greatly missed by her husband Duane “Doc” McCumber; her sons George Schrink of Ludington and Robert Schrink and wife Melanie of Tyler, Texas; her stepchildren Julie McGilvray of Davis, Cali., and Glenn McCumber of Redwood City, Cali.; her grandchildren Cody and Trevor Boukamp, Hunter Schrink, Stephan and Jordan Schrink, Mark McCumber, Erica McCumber, Keri Hurst, and Lauren McGilvray; her great-granddaughter Joy McCumber; and her sister Virginia Curtis and husband Tom of Petoskey and Naples, Fla.; along with many nieces and nephews.
A celebration of Skip’s life will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, April 13 at Bachelor Evangelical Covenant Church in Fountain with her pastor and friend, the Rev. Jay Piper officiating. Friends may meet with her family during a time of visitation on Friday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. at Wyman Funeral & Cremation Services in Scottville. Those who wish to remember Skip with a memorial donation are asked to consider Samaritan’s Purse, or Bachelor Evangelical Covenant Church.
