FREE SOIL TOWNSHIP – A 72-year-old man was repeatedly stabbed by his brother Saturday, March 23, shortly after noon, in the 8200 block of Tuttle Road, according to Mason County Sheriff Kim Cole.

The suspect, who is a 56-year-old Free Soil man, also allegedly punched a Mason County sheriff’s deputy in the side of the head prior to being taken into custody.

“Upon arrival, deputies and a Michigan DNR conservation officer located the reported suspect outside the residence and the victim in the house,” Cole said. “While a deputy and DNR officer were addressing the suspect, a second deputy went into the home and found the victim, a 72 year-old brother to the suspect, suffering from multiple stab wounds to his arm and leg.

“While the deputy and DNR officer were addressing the suspect,  he allegedly punched the deputy in the side of the head and he was then taken into custody.

“Life EMS transported the victim to Spectrum Health Ludington Hospital where he was initially treated before being transferred to Butterworth Hospital in Grand Rapids with serious, but non-life-threatening injuries.”

The suspect remains lodged in the Mason County Jail pending arraignment. He faces charges of felonious assault and assaulting a police officer.
