Obituary: Marshall White, 92, Ludington

Marshall Peter White, 92, of Ludington, passed away on February 24, 2019.  Marshall was born on March 20, 1926, in Howell, the son of Peter and Ruth (Chilcote) White.  He attended Grand Haven High School and received his diploma in 1944. He was first called into the U.S Navy in 1944 and again in 1951.  Marshall received a bachelor of arts degree from University of Michigan 1951. In 1952 he joined the workforce at Westinghouse in Pittsburgh, Pen.. and then transferred to Buffalo, New York in 1953. Marshall received his master’s degree in electrical engineering from the University at Buffalo in 1957.

Marshall was wed to Joyce (Harvey) White in 1949, with whom he raised their three children. In 1957 Marshall and his family moved back to Grand Haven where he worked for Gardner Denver as an electrical design engineer. He enjoyed their family camping vacations at various locations in Michigan and Canada.

In 1962 Marshall designed and built the original electronic control console for the Grand Haven Musical Fountain. He also programed some of the first fountain performances. Before being transferred to New Hampshire in 1982, he began the work to computerize the fountain.

Marshall and Joyce lived in New Hampshire for six years until Marshall retired in 1988.  Marshall and Joyce spent the majority of their retirement in Grand Rapids.

Marshall was a member of the Community Church of Christ.

Marshall is survived by his children, Julie and her husband, Norman Preusch, Ronald and his wife, Barbara White, and Kevin and his wife, Gayle White; grandchildren, Adam and his wife, Jenny White, Aaron Preusch,  Abbie and her husband Grant Koster, and Alex and his wife, Amanda White; six great-grandchildren, Ashton, Kendall, Brode, Camryn, Brooke and Leon; and brother, Lyle and his wife, Kathy White; and many nieces and nephews and their families.

Marshall was preceded in death by his parents, Peter and Ruth White; wife, Joyce White; and sisters, Mary Ellen Coyle and Patricia Vanderhook.

A memorial service will be held in the spring.
