LUDINGTON – A 29-year-old Victory Township man faces a one-year jail term after pleading “no contest” to attempted second-degree child abuse in 51st Circuit Court Thursday, Jan. 17.
Daniel Aaron VanKampen, of 2985 N. Gordon Rd., was also facing a felony charge of second-degree criminal sexual conduct (CSC), which was dismissed in a plea agreement.
“The victim was spending the night at a house where Mr. VanKampen was one of the adults in the house,” said Mason County Assistant Prosecutor John Middlebrook, adding that VanKampen was in “a position of authority.”
She woke up to him touching her chest under her clothing, said Judge Susan K. Sniegowski.
The incident occurred last May on Johnson Road in Custer Township.
VanKampen will have to register as a sex offender, said Middlebrook. His sentence will also include probation, and his up-front jail time is unconditional. Sentencing guidelines in the case are 0-11 months.
Sentencing is set for March 5 at 2:15 p.m.
