PENTWATER – The Pentwater Police Department received a report Tuesday, Jan. 15, of a phone scam “involving subjects who identified themselves over the phone as members of the department,” said Pentwater Police Chief Laude Hartrum.
“The caller ID shows the Pentwater Police Department,” Hartrum said.
“The caller identifies themselves as an officer of the Pentwater Police Department and then tells the caller that the department has a warrant for their arrest. The caller was told to contact the department attorney to work things out and given a phone number and a docket number. These numbers are false. The caller said they would call back in 24 hrs to make sure the warrant had been taken care of.
“The Pentwater Police Department does not accept money over the phone to ‘work things out.’ This is a scam,” said Hartrum. “If you receive one of these calls, do not give any personal or financial information to the call.
“People receiving these calls should report the contact to their local law enforcement agency.”
