HAMLIN TOWNSHIP – An elderly Mason County man was admitted to Spectrum Health Ludington Hospital for hypothermia Wednesday morning, Dec. 26, after the SUV he was driving crashed into the Big Sable River at the Ludington State Park.
“Responding units found an SUV-type vehicle partly in the water destroyed by fire,” said Mason County Sheriff Kim Cole.
Emergency personnel responded at 9:25 a.m. to a non-injury one-vehicle traffic crash at the state park boat launch, Cole said.
“Emergency crews were dispatched to a reported vehicle in the water, which had burned, with an elderly man sitting on a bench nearby who appeared confused,” Cole said. “It appeared the crash had taken place some time during the night/early morning hours after the driver, an elderly Mason County man, became confused and was driving on a paved trail within the Ludington State Park. The vehicle ended up in the river near the boat launch. The driver was admitted to Spectrum Health Ludington Hospital for hypothermia.”
