George William Stakenas, 65, of Scottville, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Saturday, July 14, 2018.
George was born on August 19, 1952 in Ludington, the son of Raymond and Sophia (Grimmel) Stakenas. He graduated from Mason County Central High School in 1970 and later attended West Shore Community College. Since the early 1970s, George has been the groundskeeper at Lincoln Hills Golf Course, finally retiring in 2010. “Papa George” was a laid-back kind of guy and was very proud of his family. He enjoyed watching professional golf, Detroit Tigers baseball, and spending time with his grandchildren.
George is survived by his sons, Michael (Laura) Stakenas and Steven (Stephanie) Stakenas; grandchildren, Faith and Paige Whitaker, Shelby and Logan Stakenas, and Mallorie Jean Stakenas; sister-in-law Sandra (Sanders) Stakenas; and his nieces and nephews, David, Janice, Allen, Mark, Sharon, and Jeff.
George was preceded in death by his parents, Raymond, Sophia, and Mary (Thompson) Stakenas; and siblings, Gene, Leroy, and Lucille.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 1 p.m. on Sunday, August 19, 2018 at Steven’s home, 8393 N LaSalle Rd in Free Soil. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Fund.
