Story updated: LAKE MICHIGAN — One person was injured after a 31-foot long cabin cruiser boat caught on fire in Lake Michigan. The fire occurred about 1/4 mile off shore of the Ludington State Park sometime after 11 a.m. The U.S. Coast Guard was initially dispatched to rescue the occupants of the boat. The Coast Guard transported the man to the Loomis Street Boat Launch in Ludington where personnel from Life EMS ambulance treated him for smoke inhalation and transported him to Spectrum Health Ludington Hospital, according to dispatch information from Mason-Oceana 911.
Ludington Fire Chief Jerry Funk then contacted 911 and inquired if the boat was still on fire. At that time, the Ludington Fire/Police Harbor One fire boat was dispatched. Mason County Sheriff’s Office marine patrol also was dispatched.
The boat has since sunk into Lake Michigan in an area about 65-feet deep. Initially it was reported that the boat was a 24-foot aluminum boat. This was based on dispatch information.
