GRANT TOWNSHIP — A 70-year-old South Dakota woman who was attempting to pick up her cell phone while driving was injured after her vehicle collided with another vehicle on North US 31 Friday morning, according to Dep. Ken Baum of the Mason County Sheriff’s Office.

The woman was driving northbound with her dog in a Hyundai when she crossed the centerline just north of Hoague Road and collided with a southbound Dodge Caravan driven by Russell Greenhoe, 57, of Manistee. Greenhoe was traveling with his wife, Beatrice, 59, and their 8-year-old grandson to Ludington.

“She came right at me,” he told MCP. “I swerved off the side of the road and nearly hit a road sign before getting back on the road.” Greenhoe’s vehicle traveled about 150 yards farther south before it came to a stop. The South Dakota woman’s vehicle traveled about another 75 yards north and then left the roadway. Both vehicles sustained major damage.

Donovan Juers, of Manistee County’s Filer Township, said he was traveling north behind the Hyundai when he saw her vehicle swerve. He and other passersby removed her from the vehicle.

The Hyundai driver was transported to Munson Healthcare Manistee Hospital by Life EMS ambulance, her dog was uninjured. Greenhoe and his passengers were also uninjured.

Responding to the scene were Mason County Sheriff’s Office, Michigan State Police, Grant Township Fire and Rescue, Free Soil/Meade Fire Department, and Life EMS.
