Versal V. Beemer, 91, of Free Soil passed away on Saturday, May 6, 2017 at Spectrum Health Ludington Hospital. Versal was born on January 4, 1926 on his family’s farm in Morley, the oldest of seven children born to Foster and Iva (Seaton) Beemer. Versal attended Morley High School and later graduated from Big Rapids High School. On March 21, 1946 he married Myrna Taylor in Lakeview and they celebrated 70 years together before Myrna preceded him in death on July 16, 2016.
Versal grew up, farmed, and worked in the Morley area for many years before moving to Mason County in 1968 to work for the State of Michigan Soil Conservation office. Following his retirement he continued to work as a Fieldman for Stokely’s cannery, retiring again in the mid ’90s. In retirement, Versal and Myrna enjoyed traveling to England, Hawaii, Mexico, and wintered in Texas. Versal loved to hunt and fish and often ventured to Canada or out west hunting big game like elk, moose, and bear. He never missed an opening day of deer season, always ready to go with his boys. As a conservationist, he very much enjoyed beekeeping, but mostly loved being in the presence of his family.
Versal will be greatly missed by his children: John (Norma) Beemer of Stockbridge, Larry (Judy) Beemer of Clarkston, Mary (David) Hasenbank of Free Soil, and Ronald (Renee) Beemer of Scottville; 12 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; his sisters: Marjorie Schuitema of Cedar Springs, and Nelda Carpenter of Potterville, and many nieces and nephews. Along with his wife Myrna, Versal was also preceded in death by his parents and his brothers: Basil, Mervin, Duane, and Lennie Beemer.
Versal was a longtime member of Our Savior Lutheran Church in Scottville where Funeral Services will be held for him at noon on Wednesday, May 10 with The Rev. James Schroeder officiating. Burial will follow at Maple Grove Cemetery in Free Soil. Friends may greet his family on Wednesday from 11 am. until time of services at the church.
