Rose Mary Boone, 92, of Ludington passed away on Wednesday, January 25, 2017 at the Poppen Hospice Residence in Muskegon. Rose Mary was born on May 13, 1924 in Scottville, the daughter of John and Orpha (McDonald) Rogers and graduated from St. Simon Catholic School in Ludington. She then attended the St. Mary’s Nursing School in Grand Rapids before graduating from the Mercy School of Nursing in Muskegon as a Registered Nurse. On September 14, 1946 she married Robert L. Boone at St. Jerome Catholic Church in Scottville, and they celebrated 68 years by each other’s side.
Following the births of her children, Rose Mary returned to college and earned her degree in special education from Aquinas College in Grand Rapids and began working for the Wesley School in Muskegon, a school for the mentally challenged. Rose Mary also volunteered many hours with Special Olympics cheering on her daughter Bridget and was a strong advocate for the rights of the mentally disabled. As she and Robert entered retirement, they moved back to the Mason County area, living in their home in Branch overlooking the Pere Marquette River.
Rose Mary was preceded in death by her husband Robert in 2014, her daughter Bridget, her son William, and her sisters Margaret Hausler and Rita Wadel.
Rose Mary will be lovingly remembered by her son Robert Boone Jr. and his wife Kerrie of Norton Shores, her grandchildren Keegan and Keldon, her sister Loretta Nichols of Scottville, her sister-in-law Betty Boone of Muskegon, her brother-in-law Lee Hausler of Jackson, and several nieces and nephews.
The funeral mass will be celebrated for Rose Mary at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, January 31 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Custer with The Rev. Daniel DePew as celebrant. Burial will take place at Pere Marquette Cemetery in Ludington. Friends may meet with her family for a time of visitation on Tuesday morning from 10 to 11 a.m. at St. Mary’s Church.
