LUDINGTON — For the past month, 7-year-old Sawyer Hendrickson, with the help of her mother, Heather, and many others in the community, has been baking goodies to brighten the holiday season for soldiers and sailors.

They have sent out over 2,000 packages, with the final ones being sent out Tuesday.

“She got the idea when she was talking on Skype to her brother, Kyler, who is in the Marines,” Heather says. “He was telling us about how there are a lot men and women in the military who can’t get home for the holidays. She wanted to raise their spirits up and give them a little something for Christmas.”

The care packages included cookies, salty snacks, popcorn, and Christmas cards, made by kids locally and from other parts of the country who have sent them to Sawyer to include in the packages.

“I’m pretty proud of her,” Heather says. “She’s a very giving girl.”

Sawyer is a second grader at Franklin Elementary School.
