Joan Emerson Matheson, 87 of Pentwater passed away peacefully on Thursday, November 26, 2015 at the Cherry Blossom Manor in Hart. Joan was born on April 18, 1928 in Fremont, Ohio, the daughter of Carl and Edith (Emerson) Meggitt, and graduated from Fremont High School. She furthered her education at Case Western Reserve University graduating with a Bachelor’s degree, and earned her Master’s Degree at Oakland University in Rochester. Joan went on to become the head of the Early Childhood Development Program at Highland Park Community College. She loved riding horses and became a very accomplished Horsewoman, where she received many awards riding Tennessee Walkers. Joan was a member of Mason County Reformed Church. She was preceded in death by her parents and her son Keith Matheson.
Joan will be greatly missed by her son Dr. Craig Matheson and his wife, Jane Verduin of Ludington, her daughter-in-law Sarah Combs of Pentwater, her grandchildren Kate, Tess, and Abby Matheson, her former husband Ken Matheson of Pentwater, and several cousins.
Funeral services will be held for Joan at 4 p.m. on Saturday, November 28 at the Mason County Reformed Church with her pastor, The Rev. Todd Bush officiating. Burial will take place at Pentwater Cemetery. Friends may meet with Joan’s family for a time of visitation on Saturday from 3 p.m. until time of services at the church.
