Joseph E. Johnson Sr, age 70 , of Scottville and Sebring, Florida passed away March 2, 2015 at the Florida Hospital in Orlando Florida.
Joe was born June 4, 1944 to Elden and Eulalia (Butler) Johnson and grew up in Big Rapids. After high school graduation, he proudly served in the United States Air Force from 1962 -1966. In June of 1965 he married Sally Wentland. She preceded him in death in 2004. He married Mary Singler Stubli in 2005.
During Joe’s lifetime he had a variety of occupations – farming, heavy equipment operator, firefighter, welder, auctioneer and teacher. At age 37, Joe started college. He received his teaching diploma from Central Michigan University. He taught welding at West Shore Community College. In 1987 Joe took a teaching job at the Michigan Correctional Facility. In 2000 Joe got his best job – retirement.
Joe was a life member of the Masonic Lodge, VFW, American Legion, AMVETS, and the Fraternal Order of Eagles. He enjoyed spending time with his family, hunting, traveling, and visiting with friends.
Joe was preceded in death by his parents and sisters – Betty Gilchrist and Arlene VanAlstine.
Joe is survived by his wife, Mary; his children Joseph E. Johnson Jr (Tami) of Scottville, Sally Wittlieff (Raymond) of Scottville, David J. Johnson ( Danielle) Scottville; his grandchildren Kristen & Jessie Johnson, Jonathan, Erin and Jordyn Wittlieff, Ethan & Jacob Johnson.
He is also survived by a sister Jeanne Rardin of Big Rapids Michigan and a brother Bill (Claudia) Johnson of Paris Michigan, sister-in-law Susan Howard of Ormand Beach Florida.
Joe has been cremated and a service will take place in the spring. Memorials can be made to the Sally K. Johnson One Good Day Fund of the Lakeshore Community Cancer Foundation.
