UPDATED: BRANCH TWP. — Police are investigating an armed robbery that took place around 6 p.m. Friday night at Branch Grocery Store, 9455 E. U.S. 10. A white male, armed with a handgun, apparently threatened the two employees working with a handgun. No one was injured during the robbery.

Troopers from the Michigan State Police Hart Post were first to arrive on the scene. They were assisted by deputies from Mason County Sheriff’s Office and Lake County Sheriff’s Office.

“At this time all we can say is that there was one male suspect involved in an armed robbery,” said Lt. Det. David Johnson. MCP has learned that a handgun was used and that the suspect was white, wearing a dark shirt or jacket.

Johnson said the suspect took cash and left to the east on U.S. 10. He said he does not believe anyone in that vicinity is in danger.

Branch Grocery is owned by Joe and Teri Negele. The Negeles were not working in the store at the time of the robbery.

K-9 units from Mason and Lake counties were called to the scene but not used.

Johnson said the state police expect to release more information Saturday.
