PERE MARQUETTE TWP. — Two people are dead following a car/semi crash at noon today on South Pere Marquette Highway near the southbound U.S. 31 onramp.
The crash occurred when a southbound Chevrolet Cavalier attempted a U-turn, in doing so it turned into path of a southbound semi-truck/trailer, owned by CIS Snow Plowing and Excavating of Ludington.
The driver of the passenger car, a 19-year-old female was pronounced dead at the scene and her 18-year-old male passenger died at Spectrum Health Ludington Hospital. A pre-teen child riding in the back seat was seriously injured and flown to DeVos Children’s Hospital in Grand Rapids by Aero Med air ambulance. The child’s condition is unknown at this time. At the scene, Mason County Sheriff Kim Cole described the child’s condition as critical. The residence of the victims has not yet been released, however, the car had a sticker from a local car dealership on it.
Pere Marquette Township Fire Dept., Ludington Fire Dept., Life EMS and Michigan State Police Motor Carrier, along with Mason County Sheriff’s Office, responded to the scene. Mason County Sheriff’s Office Victim’s Services Unit is assisting deputies in notifications.
The crash remains under investigation by the Mason County Sheriff’s Office Crash Re-Construction Team.
