PERE MARQUETTE TWP. — Two people are dead following a car/semi crash on Pere Marquette Highway. The crash occurred shortly after noon on Thursday. According to Mason County Sheriff Kim Cole, a small Chevrolet car was making a U-turn just south of the southbound U.S. 31 onramp when it drove into the path of an oncoming semi truck and trailer.
The female driver of the car was declared dead at the scene. Her adult male passenger and juvenile female passenger were transported by Life EMS ambulance to Spectrum Health Ludington Hospital and then were expected to be transported by Aeromed air ambulance to a Grand Rapids hospital. However, one of the two passengers has since died at the hospital, according to Sheriff Cole. The other passenger is in critical condition, Cole said. The male driver of the semi was not injured.
Responding to the scene, in addition to the sheriff’s office and Life EMS, were Pere Marquette Twp. Fire Dept. and Ludington Fire Dept. Personnel were still on scene as of 1:04 p.m.
