Expressway accident causes serious injuries, shut down

HART TWP., Oceana County — Troopers from the Michigan State Police-Hart Post are investigating a two car accident that occurred on north bound U.S. 31 near Polk Rd that resulted in serious injuries to three individuals.

The accident was report at 4:24 p.m. on Friday, September 13. Initial information indicates that both vehicles were traveling north bound on U.S. 31 when one vehicle struck the other from behind at high speed. Both vehicles left the roadway and rolled over, causing one subject to be ejected.

A 19-year-old Shelby man was taken to Lakeshore Hospital in Shelby with serious injuries and was later transferred to Butterworth Hospital in Grand Rapids. The occupants of the other vehicle, a 52-year-old man and a 57-year-old woman, both from Leslie, Mich., were flown to Butterworth hospital by Aeromed helicopter for treatment of serious injuries.

Troopers closed northbound U.S. 31 between Shelby Road and Polk Road for approximately four hours to process the accident scene. The accident remains under investigation and it has not been determined if drugs or alcohol were a factor.

Troopers were assisted by the Oceana County Sheriff’s Office , Hart Fire Department, and Shelby Fire Department.
