Firefighters were called to the scene around 6:30 p.m. and were on scene for two hours. Hamlin Twp. Fire Chief Steve Vandervest said the garage was fully engulfed upon arriving.

Letha Fulton said her son’s car, a Porsche, was the cause of the fire. She said Dan saw smoke coming from the unattached garage, located about 30 feet from the house, and attempted to extinguish the fire. But, when he opened a car door the flames were fueled instantly by oxygen making it too difficult to put the fire out.

Vandervest said the garage and the car were a total loss. The Fultons did have insurance.

The Fultons own the Letha Fulton School of Dance. Letha said many of her dance school records were lost in the fire.

Jagger Road between Lincoln Road and Jebavy Drive was closed during the fire.

In addition to Hamlin Twp. Fire Dept., Pere Marquette Twp. Fire Dept., Ludington Fire Dept., Mason County Sheriff’s Office and the West Shore Chapter of American Red Cross, responded. The Red Cross supplied water and Gatorade to the firefighters. Temperatures were in the mid-70s but the humidity was high.
