Photos by Rob Alway. Editor-in-Chief. PERE MARQUETTE TWP. – Could summer get much better than days like today? Temperatures were in the low ’80s, there was a slight breeze from Lake Michigan and the game of the day was old time base ball (two words). The Ludington Mariners took on the Chicago Salmon at Historic White Pine Village. The rules of the game were from the 1860’s. Fielders do not use gloves. A fly ball caught on the first bounce is an out. The hurler (pitcher) throws the ball so that the striker (batter) may hit it. The umpire does not call balls and strikes.
