LAKE TWP., Lake County — One of the brothers who died in the double-drowning in a Carr Settlement pond Thursday may have been trying to rescue the other. Leander Troyer, 7, and his brother, Jethro, 9, died in a recently made-pond on the family’s Tyndall Road farm.
According to Carr Fire Department Fire Chief Bruce Burke, one of the boys may have fallen in the pond and the other tried to save him. MCP was told by a Carr area resident that the children were found by family, who took them out of the pond and attempted to revive them while rescuers were en-route. The children still had their clothes on when they were taken out of the pond.
The farm is located on the east side of the road, which is the county line. The pond was about 8 feet deep and the water temperature was apparently around 49 degrees, according to the Lake County Sheriff’s Office. The pond was fed by a nearby creek.
Lake County deputies and rescue crews from Carr and Lake Township fire departments were called to the home around 6:30 p.m. Attempts to revive the boys were unsuccessful.
The boys were the oldest of four children. The family owns a farm that specializes in camel milk.
The incident is still under investigation.
