Fire departments were busy Tuesday night across the county. Scottville Fire Dept. was called to a chimney fire on U.S. 31 near Dewey Road. When the department arrived, the entire north side of the house was engulfed in flames. Custer and Fountain departments were called to assist.
We have been told that the fire burned through the roof and damaged most of the second floor. Most of the first floor was saved, however. U.S. 31 had been closed during the fire.
Ludington Fire Dept. was called to a fire at 609 E. Melendy St. just before midnight. Fire Chief Jerry Funk said flames were coming out if the back of the house when firefighters arrived.
“Nobody was living in the house, it was being renovated,” Funk said.
Pere Marquette Fire Dept. was called to assist. Funk said a state police fire marshal will be investigating both fires
Also assisting at both scenes was the West Shore Chapter of American Red Cross.
“We really appreciate the Red Cross,” Funk said. “It was about 30 degrees last night and hot coffee helps.”
