LUDINGTON — Lake Michigan Carferry Service has announced the SS Badger will not be sailing Tuesday due to extreme weather conditions.
The National Weather Service is predicting Hurricane Sandy’s impact will be reached all the way to the Great Lakes. Winds to gale force (34-47 kts) are expected on Lake Michigan today through Tuesday with large waves steadily building into Tuesday. Waves on Tuesday will likely reach the 12 to 18 foot range. The highest waves will be found south of Holland in north flow. The possibility exists for a few storm force (48-63 kts) gusts late tonight and Tuesday over Lake Michigan.
A long duration of high winds and large waves are expected today through Wednesday on Lake Michigan. This will result in some beach erosion and hamper marine commerce/travel, according to National Weather Service. Dangerous conditions are expected along piers and breakwalls as large waves crash over the structures out of the north.
The Badger’s last scheduled day of sailing this season is Friday.
