Woman dies in morning fire

LUDINGTON — A 53-year-old woman died as a result of a fire this morning in Ludington. Fire Chief Jerry Funk said the Ludington and Pere Marquette Twp. fire departments were called to 313 N. Robert Street at 3:23 a.m.

The house was divded into six apartments, five were occupied.

“When we got there, flames were coming out the windows and the roof,” Funk said. He said firefighters were able to locate the victim and pull her out of the building. CPR was adminstrated on the scene.

Funk said the two departments had a difficult time fighting the fire. The victim was on oxygen and several oxygen tanks exploded inside the house, causing a hazard.

The event was the area’s first fatal fire of 2012.
