The second driver involved in a two-vehicle crash that occurred late Monday evening has passed away. The Michigan State Police reported that Brittani Goda, 31, of Manistee, succumbed to her injuries while in Mercy Hospital in Muskegon. Goda’s 2 1/2-year-old daughter, who was a passenger, remains in the hospital. Initial information stated that she had been treated and released.
Daisy Mazeika, 51, of Manistee, was pronounced dead at the scene.
The crash occurred Aug. 2 on US 31 between Townline and Colburn roads. Emergency personnel were dispatched to the scene, in front of Stakenas Farms at 11:44 p.m.
According to Michigan State Police Trooper Matt Demny, the crash involved a 2001 Buick Park Avenue, driven by Mazeika, and a 2012 Nissan Murano, driven by Goda. Demny said the Nissan was northbound while the Buick was southbound. He said results of a preliminary investigation indicate the Nissan crossed the centerline and struck the Buick head-on, killing Mazeika. Goda was pinned in the vehicle. She was transported by ambulance to Spectrum Health Ludington Hospital then Mercy Hospital in Muskegon where she is listed in serious condition.
The crash closed down US 31 between Free Soil and Fountain roads.
Emergency units responding to the scene included MSP, Mason County Sheriff’s Office deputies and crash scene investigators, Free Soil/Meade Fire Department, Grant Township Fire Department, Fountain Area Fire Department, Life EMS ambulance and MMR ambulance. The crash remains under investigation.
