Ludington siren going silent temporarily.

LUDINGTON — The city’s siren is being disconnected on Tuesday, April 30, due to the demolition of the old fire station at the corner of Loomis and Robert streets. City Manager Mitch Foster said the siren will eventually be relocated to another downtown location.

The siren, which is sounded every day at noon, serves as an emergency alert siren. Before radio pagers, it used to signal the volunteer fire department when there was an emergency so firefighters knew to report to the fire station.

The siren has also served as a youth curfew reminder, which is sounded at 10 p.m. each night.

Foster said the relocation and reconnection may take several months.
