Obituary: Barbara Maclean, 91, Ludington.
Barbara “Bobbie” Maclean, of Ludington, peacefully passed away surrounded by family on Tuesday, April 9, 2019 at the age of 91. Bobbie was born on October 10, 1927 in Lansing to Alfred and Edna (Watson) Seyfried. After graduating from Lansing Eastern High School in 1945 and Lansing Secretarial School in 1947 she went to work for the Michigan State Highway Department. She met Kenneth Maclean of Maclean Construction while working at the Highway Department. She and Ken married in 1949, raised three children and celebrated their 38th anniversary before Ken’s death in 1987.
In 1970 Ken moved the company and family to Ludington to be closer to the large projects they had on US 31 and the pumped storage power plant. Bobbie immediately became active in her new hometown by volunteering as a “Pink Lady” at Memorial Medical Center. Over the years she volunteered with the Red Cross blood drives and read with first grade students at Lakeview Elementary. She joined Community Church in 1977 where her amazing organizational skills were put to work helping coordinate coffee hours, socials, cookie walks, and communion service. She also served on the church board and was active in the Christian Women’s Fellowship program and Ladies Bible Study.
Bobbie loved reading, gardening and visiting with her children and grandchildren. Nature and wildlife were very important to her. She gave generously to several wildlife preservation programs as well as local animal causes. She and Ken were part of the original group that formed to restore and preserve the Big Sable Lighthouse and most recently she donated to the Port of Ludington Maritime Museum’s Fresnel lighthouse lenses exhibit.
She was a kind, generous and classy woman and is already greatly missed by her family and many friends. She is survived by her three children, Scott (Linda) Maclean of Boise, Idaho, Amy Maclean of Anchorage, Alaska, David (Kathy) Maclean of Ludington; two grandchildren, Kyle (Missy) Maclean of Boise, Idaho, Kendra Maclean of Boise; great-grandson, Owen Maclean of Boise; and her beloved cat Smokey. She was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth Maclean and sister, Betty (Seyfried) Kats.
A celebration of Bobbie’s life will be held on Monday, May 20, 2019 beginning at 11 a.m. at Community Church of Ludington. In lieu of flowers the family is asking that you honor Bobbie by making a donation to Harbor Hospice or Lakeshore Animal Friends.
