SHERMAN TOWNSHIP — Two men were seriously injured following a single vehicle crash on Custer Road just north of Millerton Road Monday, Dec. 31, 2018. The crash occurred about 1:30 p.m. when the Ford F-150 was traveling northbound on Custer Road, and apparently crossed the centerline, left the roadway and then rolled over, trapping the passenger. The vehicle’s alert system notified Mason-Oceana 911 of the crash.
According to Mason County Sheriff Dep. Mike Fort, on the scene, the two men were Polish nationals traveling from the Chicago area. They appeared to have been in the area on a fishing trip, Fort said.
The cause of the crash is under investigation, but icy roads may have been a factor, Fort said, adding that alcohol and/or drugs have not been ruled out.
Emergency personnel from Fountain Area Fire Department and Free Soil/Meade Fire Department used rescue equipment to extricate the passenger from the truck. The 54-year-old driver was transported by ambulance to Spectrum Health Ludington Hospital while the 58-year-old passenger was transported by ambulance to Munson Healthcare Manistee Hospital.
Responding to the scene were Mason County Sheriff’s Office, Michigan State Police, Fountain Area Fire Department, Free Soil/Meade Fire Department, and Life EMS.
