AMBER TOWNSHIP — Sharon Shillinger, 48, was seriously injured Wednesday afternoon after the lawnmower she was operating was struck by a vehicle in the 4500 block of West Hansen Road.

The incident occurred about 4:30 p.m. when a 20-year-old Scottville man, driving a Ford pickup truck, was attempting to make a right-hand turn out of a driveway, according to Mason County Sheriff Kim Cole. The pickup apparently pulled into the path of a westbound Volkswagon Jetta.

The pickup driver apparently saw the VW at the last second and slammed on his brakes. The female driver of the VW reacted to seeing the truck in the middle of the road and  turned her vehicle sharply to try and avoid a potential collision, by going off the road and into a driveway.

Shillinger was crossing the end of the driveway when she was struck by the VW, knocking her to the ground, according to Cole.

Shillinger was transported to Spectrum Health Ludington Hospital by Life EMS ambulance and then later flown by AeroMed helicopter to Spectrum Health Butterworth Hospital.

Responding to the scene were Mason County Sheriff’s Office, Life EMS and Pere Marquette Township Fire Department.
