LUDINGTON — A 24-year-old Ludington man was seriously injured after he drove a pickup truck into a tree in the 900 block of North James Street Tuesday morning. The man had allegedly drove away from a Ludington Police Officer who was responding to 806 N. James Street for a report of a domestic assault that had taken place. The man had initially been at that residence and apparently fled the scene and intentionally drove into a tree, according to Ludington Police Capt. Mike Harrie.

Ludington Fire Department rescue and medical personnel, along with Life EMS were called to the scene. Hydraulic rescue tools were needed to extricate the man from the vehicle. He was then transported to Spectrum Health Ludington Hospital by ambulance and later flown by helicopter to a Grand Rapids trauma center. His condition is unknown.

Harrie said the case has been turned over to the Mason County Prosecuting Attorney’s office for further review. The domestic assault apparently involved the driver of the vehicle and his 32-year-old girlfriend, according to Harrie.
